Enameled Greek revival border, this 44 mm x 34 mm pendant is set with a large 14 mm x 12mm oval cabochon of banded agate centered and raised, encircled by 20 stunningly beautiful 3 mm pearls, this would have started out as a mourning brooch, but at some point in time the pin back has been removed and a bale added so it can be enjoyed as a pendant. Gold tests 15k, and the total weight of the pendant is 12.53 grams but it is impossible to determine gold weight only. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, a flaw to the black enamel (see images to evaluate), and as noted, it was once a brooch but has been altered to be a pendant. The child’s c.1870s photo in back seems to be original to the item and consistent with date, mid-Victorian. Not noticeable to naked eye, but in great enlargement of photos, there seems to be some sort of filament in or around pearls in a couple of places. You do not see that at all in the hand or in wear. I’m unsure what that is. Pearls appear to be natural pearls, very nice lustre and thick nacre, not perfectly matched but very close.
